Vannear Bush was far ahead of his time and his visions of the future were amazingly accurate to a certain extent. At the time of the article the world had just finished the war to end all wars and everyone was rebuilding. While the Second World War produced a lot of new technology we were still along way off from the digital world of today. When you think of how far off predictions of future computers were in the 70’s saying that they would take up entire rooms in the future was completely wrong. Bush’s idea that film technology would become microfilm and cameras would become this tiny extension of the body was certainly strange but not that far off. Today’s technology has brought incredibly small technology and the ability to store huge amounts of data in a very small space much like Bush’s libraries shrinking down the microfilms. Today we shrink volumes of information onto hard drives. To have predicted to some extent the effects of technology as he did was pretty amazing.
The idea of hackers and how they fit in society and culture is an interesting idea. Certainly distinguishing hackers as people who take something that already exists and make something new out of it is a very positive view on the general populations connotation of hackers as people who intend on hurting people and destroying order. Warks point of “education is slavery” just made me laugh because sometimes it really does feel like we are slaves and that the entire system is nothing more then people who feel that that have to do this or that to get along in life. A lot of it is social pressure but it does make the world go round so there is some purpose. Its also hard to draw the line between something that is production and something that has been hacked to make it unique from the production line because if you begin to replicate the hack then it too becomes production and the hack then falls back into the same classification as the original thing being produced. Perhaps hacking on a large scale can still produce a wide variety of outcomes because it can open new ways of customization such as hacking an Iphone you can add all kinds of game apps, pass codes, wall papers, sounds etc. So the phone even if it has the same hack another is still most likely going to be unique.
